Missouri Gas Energy Better Heating Now - Home

DID YOU KNOW?

You can save 2% – 3% for each degree you are able to lower your thermostat.

FOLLOW OUR TIPS TO SAVE YOU ENERGY

Request an ENERGY STAR® rated model when replacing natural gas appliances given ENERGY STAR® rated products are proven to be more energy efficient.

CENTRAL HEATING

  • Program a programmable thermostat to have lower heating temperatures when you are away.
  • Set your thermostat furnace setting to 68°F or lower during the heating season.
  • Reduce your thermostat by 5 or 10 degrees when sleeping or when your house is empty for four hours or longer.
  • Clean or replace air filters regularly for optimum performance to save energy.
  • Have your furnace cleaned and serviced by a professional for greater efficiency and safety.
  • Use a humidifier; the extra humidity will make the air feel warmer.
  • Use ceiling fans to circulate air to make your home more comfortable. They should run clockwise in winter mode to circulate warmer air that has risen.
  • Make sure air vents and returns are not blocked by drapes or furniture and keep the vents clean.
  • Close off unoccupied rooms by shutting the vents and doors.

SAVE EVEN MORE WITH PROPER INSULATION AND SEALING

  • Insulation and home sealing, with special focus in the attic and around access panels, windows and doorways, is an important measure to reduce home energy costs.
  • Place nonflammable insulation or nonflammable pliable materials in gaps around pipes, ducts, fans or other items that enter the attic or basement from a conditioned space.
  • Close dampers on unused fireplaces. If not used for long periods, add insulating material around the perimeter of the damper. Glass doors can also be very efficient in reducing heat loss.
  • Caulk or tape any leak in ductwork used by the cooling or heating systems.
  • Raise shades to allow sunlight to enter your home during the day. Close shades on overcast days and at night when no warm sunlight is shining.

Ask your installer to properly dispose and recycle old energy-wasting water heaters, furnaces, boilers and thermostats.

MGE suggests following the Missouri Department of Natural Resources guidelines for proper disposal of old equipment. Call 573-634-2436 or visit www.dnr.mo.gov.
